Benjamin J. Southwell received his Bachelor of Robotic and Mechatronic Engineering from the University of Western Sydney (University Medal) in 2012. He is the recipient of an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), a Research Excellence Award and an Engineering Supplementary Award scholarship supporting his studies as a PhD. student in electrical engineering at the Australian Centre for Space Engineering Research. Upon completion of his BEng he worked in the industrial automation sector before returning to university to commence his PhD. studies.
He is a part of ACSERs UNSW-EC0 CubeSat team and developed the ADCS amongst other features on the satellite. He has an advanced amateur radio licence (VK2ABF) and is also responsible for ground station development and ongoing operations with EC0.
Leveraging knowledge gained from his PhD research, Ben is working on DMTC's high altitude sensor system (HASS) project which will develop a working prototype GNSS reflectometry sensor payload.
His current research interests include remote sensing with reflected Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals and other signals of opportunity using airborne and space-borne receivers.
