[SEMINAR] CANCELLED - AI Robotics for Sustainable Space Exploration

MARCEL rover on exhibition at the UK Space Conference 2019
27 March 2020 - 2:00pm to 3:00pm
Room 102, Electrical Engineering Building

Unfortunately Prof Gao is no longer able to travel to Australia due to the Covid-19 restrictions so we will be unable to provide this seminar.

Professor Yang Gao FIET FRAeS

Professor of Space Autonomous Systems, Head of STAR LAB, Surrey Space Centre

This talk will give an overview of STAR LAB’s research heritage on space AI robotics as well as development of real-world space missions, with a focus on latest research results in modelling, autonomy, navigation and control, robot-soil interaction and bio-inspired mechanisms. The talk will also introduce newly developed test facilities and demos within the STAR LAB that help showcase the state-of-the-art robotic and AI solutions for the orbital or planetary surface space scenarios.

Prof Yang Gao

Professor Yang Gao FIET FRAeS, is the Professor of Space Autonomous Systems and the Associate Dean (international) of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Surrey. She heads the Space Technology for Autonomous and Robotic systems Laboratory (STAR LAB) within the Surrey Space Centre that specializes in robotic vision, machine learning and biomimetics for spacecraft GNC and mechanisms. Prof Gao brings nearly 20 years of R&D experience in solving robotic system problems for extreme environments covering space, nuclear oil and gas. She is also actively involved in development of real-world space missions like ESA’s ExoMars, Proba3, LUCE-VMMO, UK’s MoonLITE/Moonraker and CNSA’s Chang’E3, etc.
