The Australian Centre for Space Engineering Research (ACSER) Launched

The Australian Centre for Space Engineering Research (ACSER) was launched at the University of New South Wales on the 22nd November 2010. The centre aims to assist in the Federal Government's push to increase Australia's capabilities in the space industry.
The centre will build on existing UNSW strengths of satellite navigation, earth observation, and hypersonics, and can draw on the huge expertise of Australia's largest Engineering faculty. UNSW is participating in four Australian Space Research Program (ASRP) projects. The "SAR Formation Flying" project will be based at the centre. This project investigates flying satellites in different close formations and using synthetic aperture radar to create exact models of the earth's surface, and evaluate biomass. These can then in turn be used to assist in emergency situations: earthquake, flood and fire.
The centre will establish new taught courses, a new satellite navigation testing centre, a new scheme for students to build and launch satellites, a new space payload prize, as well as pursuing important research in space instrumentation and vehicles.
A new website will be launched soon. For information please contact the Centre Director, Andrew Dempster, a.dempster@unsw.edu.au
